TEGNA Memphis is seeking a Research Manager or better yet – data storyteller - to help create a culture of consumer-centricity. The Research Manager will assess consumer preferences in the local market to help the station develop and market relevant consumer products and content; and, help business customers connect to consumers. Through a wide variety of mechanisms – surveys, focus groups, interviews, web research and more – the Research Manager will bring clarity around target audiences, competitive landscape, societal trends, pre-campaign insights, post-campaign effectiveness, business customers and other areas. The Research Manager will proactively bring the consumer voice into the station and represent the voice of the consumer while partnering on marketing, content and sales strategies. The Research Manager responsible for managing, analyzing and communicating Television and Digital audience data and Consumer Data for WATN/WLMT’s internal stakeholders and external clients.
The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding of audience measurement for media (i.e., TV ratings and audience data per Nielsen and comScore and digital media per Google Analytics), consumer facing research (i.e Simmons, Borrell) is detail-oriented and passionate about finding the “stories” in data.
Other research, including Media Monitors and Scarborough, and software programs such as NLTV, Prime Lingo and Wide Orbit Media Sales are used regularly in this role.  Due to the nature of the business and position, the ability to learn new software and new research tools is a must.  Mastery of PowerPoint, Excel and other MS Office tools is a pre-requisite.
This person should be able analyze data gathered from a variety of sources and provide insights helpful to the internal news, marketing and revenue teams as well as external clients.  Audience profiles, consumer behavior, ad hoc reports and regular reporting of performance metrics are all core to the position.
Due to the various constituencies that rely upon the position, effective communication skills are critical and include highly visual graphics, written summaries and oral presentations.


• Design and develop cost-effective research methodologies and approaches to help station understand consumers
• Research consumer demographics, preferences, needs, trends and media habits
• Effectively present and communicate research to wide variety of stakeholders both in live presentations and written form
• Confidently articulate when/why products/prototypes do/do not deliver against consumer
• Partner with 3rd party vendors and internal stakeholders on research execution
• Leverage all available existing research tools including Nielsen, Comscore, Scarborough, Google Analytics, Facebook/Twitter analytics, etc.
• Lead research of business customers and interpret data to assist Sales team.


• 3+ years experience in market analysis and research
• BA in marketing, market research, analytics, social sciences, business or communications
• Strong math and analytical skills
• Consumer category experience. Media sector experience preferred.
• Inquisitive and collaborative with a positive attitude, strong work ethic and ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic media environment.
• Mastery of understanding, processing, extracting value from, visualizing and communicating data effectively.
