KARE 11, the TEGNA NBC affiliate in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is seeking an energetic Lead Visual Storyteller to help lead our award-winning staff of photojournalists. A leader who is devoted to inspiring continued excellence from our team and has the drive for innovation in a visual medium. Our Lead Visual Storyteller is responsible for working closely with our Director of Photography and other newsroom managers in developing a culture of innovative, visual content across all KARE 11 shows and platforms and ensuring high ethical standards, as well as high quality video and audio standards. The Lead Visual Storyteller will assist the Director of Photography in managing a team that can cover everything from in depth investigations, to breaking news, to enterprise feature storytelling, to sports, to special coverage of major community events. KARE 11 has received National Press Photographers Association’s Station of the Year honor 9 times, a standard the Assistant Chief Photographer would be expected to help continue.


  • Work closely with Director of Photography to help ensure all shifts and shows are filled properly, including general assignment, our Sunrise Show, and our Breaking the News Show
  • Coordinate with Tech/Ops team to ensure all fleet management service and safety requests are addressed in timely manner including all MVD registrations, emissions, and insurance records
  • Collaborate with Director of Photography to develop and refine visual standard best practices, trainings and dept. workflows
  • Track and manage gear, and equipment and supplies to address quality and safety concerns
  • Serve as point of contact, along with Tech/Ops team to maintain smooth operation of all satellite and transmission, and content delivery systems
  • Work with news managers to develop and execute large scale event coverage, like Election Day, live remotes, and Special Events including Olympic Coverage, Presidential Visits, and The Minnesota State Fair
  • Shoot and edit stories regularly with Edius and other editing platforms as needed
  • Help create and manage a workflow to develop and maintain drone licensing for the entire photography staff
  • Work with news managers to address performance concerns and conducting annual performance reviews and goal setting


  • 6+ years network or major market experience
  • College degree in relevant field and/or relevant training
  • Self-Motivated leader with proven problem-solving abilities
  • Commitment to continuing to foster a culture of teamwork, collaboration, and innovation
  • Knowledge and interest in emerging technologies and industry best practices
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills and organizational skills
  • Ability to make quick, sound, ethical decisions while working under strict deadlines
  • Willingness to work overtime, flexible shifts, and holidays as needed
  • Ability to multi-task and juggle high-profile projects with attention-to-detail
  • Membership to National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) a plus
  • Certification as commercial drone pilot a plus, or willingness to obtain one
  • Ability to operate ENG van and live remote equipment a plus
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record
  • Should be able to handle lifting basic camera gear without issue
