Senior Investigative Producer
Are you an experienced storyteller with a natural curiosity? KSDK 5 on Your Side (NBC - St. Louis, market #23) is recruiting a leader for our award-winning investigative unit. The ideal candidate carries a reputation as an ethical, trusted journalist who demonstrates strong research capabilities and skill using the latest tools and techniques to produce compelling investigative stories that matter to everyday citizens.
The winning candidate brings a “news hound” social media presence and a demonstrated proficiency in following up on confidential tips, using social media to gather information. We are “one content team” at KSDK, so broadcast and digital platforms are of equal priority. Helping our respected reporters bring complicated, visually poor stories to life is where you will shine because it is what you’ve done. Using on-air and digital in innovative ways will be part of the job, always striving to produce stories with a “wow” factor year-round.
Responsibilities:
- Enterprise and develop investigative stories, working closely with the special projects director and reporters.
- Dig into complex and important issues.
- Develop reliable sources and contacts in general and specialized areas of interest.
- Use open records laws and computer-assisted reporting skills to find information and data that lend depth and context to our stories.
- Write in an exciting, captivating and authentic manner for multiple platforms.
- Help with production ideas for data content in on-air and online stories
- Use CAP and NICAR skills to find data and turn that into great stories.
- Help with production ideas for data content in on-air and online stories.
- Write to video in an exciting, captivating and authentic manner.
- Develop original content through social listening and independent sources.
- Interview news subjects and research for facts and credibility.
- Write and post daily on all digital platforms including social media..
- Write for the web, including attaching images and streaming video.
- Use creative production techniques such as graphics and new forms of media (user-generated content, virtual interviews, etc.) to enhance stories.
- Perform other tasks as required by management.
Requirements:
- BA/BS in journalism, communications or related field
- 5+ years of investigative producing experience
- Experience with CAP, LexisNexis and NICAR
- Experience in photojournalism, editing, and content management systems
- Understanding of the tenets of professional journalism
- A portfolio with examples of strong investigative reporting
- Knowledge of ENPS, Edius and Axis graphics, a plus
- Organizational skills and the ability to work under constant time pressure deadlines
- Ability to calmly handle breaking news situations and changing events
- Strong communication skills (written/oral)
- Proven ability to work under pressure while meeting daily assigned deadlines
- Ability to interact productively & positively within different environments
- Applicable knowledge of multiplatform news gathering tools and resources, including digital media
- Reason to live in St. Louis and/or familiarity with the region, strongly preferred
