We have an immediate opening for an Assistant News Director. The assistant news director is responsible for running day-to-day newsroom operations. This person will help plan and coordinate daily news coverage on all platforms. We're looking for someone who knows how to work closely with the digital director, assignment editor, executive producer, and chief photographer to gather and showcase great local stories. A passion for local news and innovation is a must! Must also be able to mentor a team by setting goals and encouraging them through the story process all the way through to the newscast and active live shots. He or she must be able to give quick, positive feedback as well as hold people accountable for goals set by management. We're searching for someone who has experience "owning" the big stories of the day, breaking news and especially weather coverage. Must be creative with different coverage ideas to help Reporters/MSJs/Photographers with creative storytelling. The successful candidate must also guide producers through active, creative and impactful newscasts. Must be a relentless recruiter who is always looking to make our team better. The assistant news director will be responsible for the schedule, planning specials and special reports and helping plan the long-term strategy of the news department.
In this role, you will:
Work closely with producers, reporters, anchors, assignment editor and photographers on daily news coverage
Oversee production of newscasts and special programming
Review daily newscasts to ensure quality control and brand compliance
Write copy and edit scripts for on-air and digital
Work with the news director and other managers to establish newsroom goals and work to develop and further the station's news brand
Create tactics and strategies to increase demos performance in key target areas for multiple platforms
Evaluate workflow efficiencies
Assist in the on-going evaluation of personnel
Help with recruiting and hiring for news department personnel

Here's what you need:
Working knowledge of journalistic ethics, libel, and privacy laws
Strong writing skills and a proven track record for getting results on initiatives
Ability to plan and adjust personnel during breaking news
A passion for social media
Problem solver
Great people skills with an emphasis on coaching and motivation
Broad understanding of newsroom operations and equipment
Four-year degree in journalism or communications preferred
